Our story

A place for colour,
craft & community.

Musukebba Drammeh Batik Factory is a centre for authentic Gambian batik in Dippa Kunda, near Serekunda. Also known as the Serrekunda Batik Factory or Salaam Batik, it brings traditional textile techniques to life through vibrant, hand-dyed fabrics.

The workshop is a cultural hub where local women create clothing, wall hangings and textiles for the home. Musu Kebba Drammeh is recognised for her influence on the growth of batik textile art and women’s entrepreneurship in The Gambia.

The craft

Drawn with wax.
Revealed in colour.

Batik is a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique. Candle wax is applied to fabric—usually 100% cotton—to form intricate patterns. The wax protects selected areas from dye, creating the contrasts that give each textile its character.

01 / WAX

Create the pattern

Wax is applied to the fabric to define the design.

02 / DYE

Bring in the colour

The fabric is dyed while waxed areas resist the colour.

03 / REVEAL

Uncover the detail

The wax is removed to reveal the finished pattern.
